Some animal and test tube studies have pointed to effects of pu’erh tea extracts reducing fat cell size and interrupting fatty acid synthesis. A 12-week 2014 study in 60 pre-obese Taiwanese individuals found that consuming pu’erh tea daily led to significant reductions in body weight, BMI, waist circumference and hip circumference compared to a control group.
